Reforming Truth Church is a Reformed Baptist church, located in Lexington, Kentucky. We are Gospel-focused, firmly believing the gospel of Jesus Christ to be the reforming truth—the only truth able to reform us into the image of our Lord and Savior. Our desire is to be continually reformed by this truth which is contained in the Holy Scriptures, a process that will not end this side of eternity. The primary means of knowing and experiencing this truth is through the ordinary means of grace: The preaching of the Scriptures, the administration of the sacraments (Baptism and the Lord’s Supper), and prayer. We recognize the Scriptures as the only authority for faith and practice, and we submit ourselves to the work of the church throughout history to help us with scriptural interpretation. Our goal is to be conformed into the image of our God and to go and make disciples.

1 Thessalonians 2:8

We cared so much for you that we were pleased to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own lives, because you had become dear to us.

Acts 2:42

And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers

Recognizing the Gospel as the foundation of our new life in Christ, we structure our service to be a proclamation of this Gospel. Our worship is grouped into the following sections that summarize the Gospel: God, Guilt, Grace, Gratitude, Go.

Welcome

God

We start with a proclamation of God: his character, his perfections, and his actions

Call to Worship: Psalm 34:16-18

Leader
The face of the LORD is set against those who do what is evil, to remove all memory of them from the earth. The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears, and rescues them from all their troubles. The LORD is near the brokenhearted; he saves those crushed in spirit.

Doxology

Praise God from whom all blessings flow
Praise him all creatures here below
Praise him above ye heavenly hosts
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Song: O Come All You Unfaithful

O come, all you unfaithful;
come, weak and unstable
Come, know you are not alone

O come, barren and waiting ones,
weary of praying
Come, see what your God has done

Christ is born,
Christ is born,
Christ is born for you

O come, bitter and broken,
come with fears unspoken
Come, taste of His perfect love

O come, guilty and hiding ones,
there is no need to run
See what your God has done

He’s the Lamb who was given,
slain for our pardon
His promise is peace for those who believe

So come, though you have nothing,
come, He is the offering
Come, see what your God has done

Guilt

In light of the character of God, we recognize our sin, our unworthiness, and our desperate need.

Reading of the Law: 1 John 4:7-12

Leader
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.

Confession of Sin: Almighty, Eternal God.

Congregation
Almighty, eternal God. Forgive us our sin and lead us to eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Grace

By Grace, God has not left us in our need. He has revealed himself to us and provided forgiveness of our sins, reconciliation to himself and new life.

Assurance of Pardon: Romans 3:21-26

Leader
But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

Confession of Faith: Apostles' Creed

Congregation
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day, He arose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty, whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Song: All Praise to Thee, Eternal Lord

All praise to you, eternal Lord,
clothed in our human flesh and blood,
a manger choosing for your throne,
while worlds on worlds are yours alone.

The skies did once before you bow;
a virgin's arms contain you now:
the angels who in you rejoiced
now listen for your infant voice.

"Glory to God in the highest!
And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!"

A little child, you are our guest,
that weary ones in you may rest;
forlorn and lowly is your birth,
that we may rise to heav'n from earth.

You came to us in darkest night
to make us children of the light,
to make us, in the realms divine,
as your own angels round you shine.

All this for us your love has done;
by this to you our love is won:
for this we tune our cheerful lays,
and shout our thanks in ceaseless praise.

Song: Come Thou Long Expected

Come, Thou long expected Jesus
Born to set Thy people free
From our fears and sins release us
Let us find our rest in Thee
Israel's strength and consolation
Hope of all the earth Thou art
Dear desire of every nation
Joy of every longing heart

Born Thy people to deliver
Born a child and yet a king
Born to reign in us forever
Now Thy gracious kingdom bring
By Thine own eternal spirit
Rule in all our hearts alone
By Thine all sufficient merit
Raise us to Thy glorious throne

Come, Thou long expected king
Fill our heart with gladness
Come, Thou long expected king
Fill our heart with gladness

Israel's strength and consolation
Hope of all the earth Thou art
Dear desire of every nation
Joy of every longing heart

Catechesis: An Orthodox Catechism - Lord's Day 22: The Sacraments (Questions 64-67)

Leader
Seeing that only faith makes us partakers of Christ and his benefits, from where does it proceed?

Congregation
From the Holy Spirit, who kindles it in our hearts by the preaching of the gospel, and other ordinances, and confirms it through the use of the sacraments.

Leader
What are the Sacraments?

Congregation
They are sacred signs, and seals, set before our eyes, and ordained by God for his cause, that he may declare and seal by them the promise of his gospel unto us, namely, that he freely gives remission of sins, and life everlasting, not only to his all in general, but to every one in particular who believes, on account of the sacrifice of Christ which he accomplished upon the cross.

Leader
Do not then both the word and sacraments tend to that end, as to lead our faith unto the sacrifice of Christ finished on the cross as to the only ground of our salvation?

Congregation
It is even so; for the Holy Spirit teaches us by the gospel, and assures us by the sacraments, that the salvation of all of us stands in the only sacrifice of Christ offered for us upon the cross.

Leader
How many sacraments hath Christ ordained in the New Testament?

Congregation
Two; baptism, and the Lord’s supper.

Pastoral Prayer: King of Glory, Divine Majesty

King of Glory, Divine Majesty, every perfection adorns your nature and sustains your throne; The heavens and earth are yours, The world is yours and its fullness. Your power created the universe from nothing; Your wisdom has managed all its multiple concerns, presiding over nations, families, individuals. Your goodness is boundless; all creatures wait on you are supplied by you, and are satisfied in you.

How precious are the thoughts of your mercy and grace! How excellent your lovingkindness that draws men to you! Teach us to place our happiness in you, the blessed God, never seeking life among the dead things of earth, or asking for that which satisfies the deluded; But may we prize the light of your smile, implore the joy of your salvation, find our heaven in your alone. You have attended to our happiness more than we can do; Though we are fallen creatures you have not neglected us. In love and pity your have provided us a Savior;

Apply his redemption to our hearts, by justifying our persons, and sanctifying our natures. We confess our transgressions, have mercy on us. We are weary, give us rest, We are ignorant, make us wise unto salvation, We are helpless, let your strength be made perfect in our weakness, We are poor and needy, bless us with Christ’s unsearchable riches, We are perplexed and tempted, let us travel on undismayed, knowing that you have said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’ As we pursue you through the study of your word, give us deeper understanding of who you are and how you act in history. Blessed be you great and faithful name! Amen.

Sermon: Psalm 65

Gratitude

Remembering the glorious grace of God toward us, we respond with gratitude to him and desire to know even more of him.

Song: O Come All Ye Faithful

Oh, come, all ye faithful,
Joyful and triumphant!
Oh, come ye, oh come ye to Bethlehem.
Come and behold him,
Born the King of angels

Oh, come, let us adore him;
Oh, come, let us adore him;
Oh, come, let us adore him,
Christ, the Lord.

Sing, choirs of angels,
Sing in exultation;
Sing, all ye citizens of heav'n above!
Glory to God,
Glory in the highest;

Yea, Lord, we greet thee,
Born this happy morning;
Jesus, to thee be all glory giv'n.
Son of the Father,
Now in flesh appearing

The Lord's Supper

Gloria Patri

Congregation
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be world without end. Amen.

Go

Our gratitude for what God has done for us urges us to go forth in obedience, proclaiming that same Gospel we received.

Benediction: Isaiah 9:6-7

For to us a child is born,
    to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
    and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of his government and of peace
    there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
    to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
    from this time forth and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

Amen.
